How Does Ink Fingerprinting Work

Fingerprinting Technique

Ink fingerprinting is done by pressing your finger down on an ink pad. You roll your finger from left to right to ensure your fingerprint is completely covered in ink. Next, you press your fingerprint onto a piece of paper, using the same rolling motion. When you press your finger onto the ink, the ink sticks to the ridges of your finger, but doesn’t get inside the grooves in between them. This allows your fingerprint impression to show up properly on the paper.

Special Circumstances

When fingerprints are taken, you will print all ten of your fingers. This way, all of your fingers are in the system. When investigations are done for crimes, a partial print is sometimes found. It’s easier to identify a partial print if everyone has all ten of their fingers printed. If the person being fingerprinted is missing a finger, any part of the finger that is present will be printed. If the finger is completely missing, it will be skipped. If the person being fingerprinted has an extra finger, they will begin with the thumb, and then record the next four fingers.

It’s important to make sure fingerprints are done properly so you can be put in the database. Fingers should be rolled and not swiped to prevent ink smudging. If you ever have your fingerprints ran, such as a background beck performed, all of your personal and public information will show up. Different Fingerprint Characteristics

Each person’s fingerprint is unique and features individualized elements that are identifiable to those who have studied the field. Some of the characteristics you can see include arches (e.g. plain, tented) and whorls (e.g. plain, central), among others.

How Can I See My FBI Background Check?

In an era where the population is growing at an increasing rate and individuals and organizations are highly concerned with security, FBI background checks have become commonplace for many procedures. It’s estimated that one in six U.S. citizens have a fingerprint on file with the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS).Background checksare required in situations such as:
  • Employment opportunities
  • Seeking legal representation
  • Fulfilling pre-adoption requirements
  • Student or work visas
  • Foreign work or travel
  • and many more
In order to view your background check, it’s helpful to go through a company that can take you through the process and capture your fingerprints in an accurate manner. Most organizations require two forms of identification, including one that’s government-issued, a photo ID, and currently valid.

What Can You Expect?

Your fingerprint will be sent to the FBI’s automated fingerprint information database. A report will be generated that includes all information that the FBI has on any prior arrests, including:
  • Name of arresting agency
  • Arrest date
  • Arrest charge
  • Arrest disposition, if available
If there are no records on file associated with your prints, you will receive a letter to that effect. Results are generally received within three to five business days, but can vary depending on FBI processing times. If you find information that you would like to dispute, it may be necessary to go directly to the contributing agency, such as the county court or police department, to challenge data. You may also contact the FBI CJIS Division in order to correct inconsistencies.
